Expression of Art in Movies With Responsibility

Updated: Mar 16, 2023

Nautanki is a traditional performance form that existed before cinema. It was intended for entertainment initially, but later, in the 20th century, it became instrumental in expressing the stories of freedom fighters. The first Indian movie was released in 1945, while Doordarshan marked the beginning of the television industry, followed by the development of other channels and OTT platforms. Movies are a reflection of society which in turn has evolved through movies. The young generation mirrors the fashion of their ideal actors and learns the concept of relationships with parents, spouses, neighbors, and communities from movies. The world of cinema is like a second home to many of us. Movies and art have the potential to influence and transform society, so expressing art with a sense of responsibility becomes an obligation for artists.

Movies like No Smoking (2007), Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022), Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), Vicky Donor (2012), and Padman (2018) carry a message for society. Padmaavat (2018) and Bajirao Mastani (2015) are historical movies made for entertainment purposes. Most Indian films are romance stories that showcase the younger generation's love management rather than life management skills. These movies often contain violence and explicit content that fuels kids’ imaginations. The woke content in the film can mislead young minds into creating a wrong impression of complex issues like homosexuality, communal conflicts, immigration, etc.

Appropriate presentation of historical and religiously significant facts in a film is an obligation. The writers, producers, directors, and actors are responsible for their art's effect on society; therefore, they should create the content thoughtfully. The religious sentiments of the public should be duly respected, and the religiously significant shlokas, songs, images, and names of gods should not be twisted and misrepresented under the guise of freedom and art.

Why does the public not have any complaints against South Indian movies? It is because the content is tailored, keeping in mind the needs of the Indian community. Movies and entertainment channels are, after all, meant for the public. Thus, Bollywood must create films and series that contribute to the healthy growth of society. The selection of content that preserves our traditions and beliefs is mandatory if we want to conserve the crudeness of Indian society. Otherwise, we will be another version of a woke western culture that will lead to the fall of our great civilization. Create art meticulously with a sense of responsibility towards our society.
