Why do Indian television dramas suck?

Updated: Apr 12, 2023

How many of you think that Indian TV dramas are boring? Here are a few reasons why I think they are annoying and far from being entertaining:

  1. Lack of good plot and engaging scripts - The scripts are uninspiring and lack experimentation and innovativeness. Almost every story starts with love between two people and ends with a Saas-bahu face-off. What makes the audience accept such hum drum plots? The audience wants the lead cast to be together, but the director keeps them apart for 3-4 yrs to keep the audience coming for more. Another thing is the family drama and emotions which the audiences can relate to. We want to see producers and directors experimenting with new and more realistic stories.

  2. Hiring good-looking but untalented cast – Producers hire freshers like corporate companies. Some of them are talented, but most of them are not.

  3. The Unlimited Marathon of episodes – No one knows when the series ends. The show continues running for years, between which the main characters meet and separate n number of times. The whole series is about the death and rebirth of characters. Then, some duplicates of the hero/heroine also enter the show to make it more creepy.

  4. Lack of content for the intellectual audience –I see why intellectuals in India prefer to watch Marvel and other Hollywood shows instead of Indian love stories. Make something better than Marvel, and then see the difference in TRP ratings. Just make original and sensible content.

  5. Too many never-ending reality shows – There has been an increase in reality shows in recent years. The channels don’t have quality and creative content to offer. Instead, they scan talent across the nation and show that to us. It has helped discover fresh talent, but what is that talent doing afterward? Are they contributing to the TV industry in the long run? A few have joined the film industry, but what about television? We need intelligent and responsible scriptwriters, not singers and dancers, to save the industry’s fall.

  6. Plagiarised stories- The content is never original. It is adapted from old popular series or some Hollywood show.

I have stopped watching Indian TV altogether. If you like K-drama and C-drama, you will know what kind of useless content is shown to us in the name of entertainment. Stop watching such shows, and let the producers know they are doing a lousy job while picking up the directors and scriptwriters.
